My Sculptie is Inside-Out!

Sculpties that appear inside-out are very common. Sometimes it's what a sculpter wants. Most times, not so much.

First the quick fix: open your sculpt map in the image editor of your choice and flip the entire thing horizontally and save. That's it. On the same token, if you WANT your sculptie to look inside out, do the same thing!

Explanation please?

Inside-out sculpties are cause by flipped normals. You see, the faces of a mesh only have one side. From the OTHER side, the face looks invisible. Usually you want the OUTSIDE of your mesh visible. The inside-out meshes have the INSIDE of the mesh as visible. So without getting into a total technical explanation that even _I_ don't understand, flipping your sculpt map switches which side of your mesh is visible.

Why would I ever want a sculptie to be inside-out?

Inside-out meshes have an odd quality about them wherein they give the impression of being translucent without actually being translucent. So? You can make stuff transparent in SL, right? But... have you ever tried making a partially transparent prim shiny? It doesn't work. You CAN, however, make an inside-out sculptie shiny. This is a great way to make glass bottles, balloons, and ... moulded jello!
